London Contact Improvisation (LCI) is a non-profit group promoting contact improvisation in London. The organisation was founded in April 2001 by Kate Hilder, Robert Anderson and Joukje Kolff to organise weekly classes and jams in London. At the time there were no regular contact improvisation classes or jams in London.

LCI has organised various weekend jams, summer jams in 2001 and 2002 and three seasons of weekly classes and jams. The season in 2001-2002 was funded by Awards for All, the 2002-2003 season was funded by London Arts and the 2003-2004 was funded by the Arts Council of England. All seasons have been supported by the Moving East Centre for Dance, Martial Arts and Complementary Medicine.

LCI aims to:
  • Promote Contact Improvisation as a community and performance movement art form.

  • Organise accessible-to-all events, including workshops, classes, jams (informal practice sessions) and performances.

  • Encourage participation by all members of the community including artists and non-artists, people of diverse backgrounds, ages and abilities.

  • Support the development of the artistic, educational and therapeutic aspects of Contact Improvisation.

  • Promote influences from body-mind practices related to Contact Improvisation by supporting the work of artists and teachers working in these fields.

  • Encourage broad and diverse approaches to Contact Improvisation by bringing teachers from overseas and across the UK to events in London as well as to support teachers and performers in London to pursue their work in other parts of the U.K. and abroad.
