 Clitoral Embodiment with Nicole Bindler

This workshop forms part of my PhD practice as research project exploring the sexual body of the mother in dance

Workshop info:

The embryology of the genitalia represents an unexplored frontier in Body-Mind Centering® (BMC®). Unlike its embryological corollary, the penis, the clitoris is absent from most illustrated anatomy texts. Clitoral Embodiment remedies the inattention paid to female and non-binary genital development by presenting a framework for embodying multiple potentials for sex and gender expressions through imagery, movement and embryological study, with an emphasis on invagination over penetration. Standing at the intersection of somatics, embryology and gender/sexuality studies, Clitoral Embodiment uses BMC embodied anatomy through guided solo somatic movement and dance improvisation to explore an underlying biological explanation for sex and gender fluidity. People of all genders are welcome, and all explorations in this workshop will be practiced fully clothed. Participants will have access to text from two articles by Nicole Bindler about Clitoral Embodiment that were published in the Journal of Dance & Somatic Practices (Vol. 9, No. 1, 1 June 2017) and Contact Quarterly (Vol. 42, No. 1 Winter/Spring 2017).

Nicole Bindler's performance work has been presented throughout the U.S., Canada, Argentina, and in Berlin, Tokyo, Beirut, Bethlehem, Mexico City, and Quito. Her dances have been supported by the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage, Leeway Foundation, Puffin Foundation, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and the Ellen Forman Memorial Award. Bindler holds a BA in Dance and Poetry from Hampshire College, a degree in Muscular Therapy from the Muscular Therapy Institute, and certificates in Embodied Anatomy Yoga, Embodied Developmental Movement and Yoga, and Practitioner of Body-Mind Centering from the School for Body-Mind Centering. She has taught Somatics and Improvisation at Temple University, University of the Arts, and the University of Pennsylvania. Her writing has been published in Critical Correspondence, Contact Quarterly, Emergency Index by Ugly Duckling Presse, Jewish Currents, BMC® Currents, Curate This, Journal of Dance & Somatic Practices, and thINKingDANCE. Bindler is a member of the Jewish Voice for Peace Artist Council and is the Founder and Director of The Institute for Somatics and Social Justice.

The workshop is open to all genders.

This is an all day workshop, 10am to 5pm with one hour break for lunch.

Cost: £60 or £45 (concession)

Please note that places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

The Underscore Definition:

The Underscore is a long-form dance improvisation structure developed by Nancy Stark Smith. It has been evolving since 1990 and is practiced all over the globe.

The Underscore is a vehicle for incorporating Contact Improvisation into a broader arena of improvisational dance practice; for developing greater ease dancing in spherical space—alone and with others; and for integrating kinesthetic and compositional concerns while improvising. It allows for a full spectrum of energetic and physical expressions, embodying a range of forms and changing states. Its practice is familiar yet unpredictable.

The practice—usually 3 to 4 hours in length—progresses through a broad range of dynamic states, including long periods of very small, private, and quiet internal activity and other times of higher energy and interactive dancing.

Movement
with Irene Cena, Alex Crowe, Gaelin Little & Srik Narayanan

Returning this autumn for a third season, these classes offer an opportunity to explore our bodies from within, our relationship to space and others.  Using imagery, hands-on bodywork, breath and voice we'll find our way into movement and together create a safe and supportive space to experiment, play and discover our own nature. Learning from our bodies, we cultivate the experience of more awareness, ease, fluidity and support in ourselves and the joy in moving and dancing together.
In facilitating these sessions the teaching team will be drawing on their practice of disciplines such as dance, martial arts, mindfulness meditation, Skinner Releasing Technique, Body-Mind Centering® and Authentic Movement.
Open to everybody. No prior experience of dance, somatics
or bodywork is necessary. Just bring your curiosity.

The function of fascia in CI
Robin Berkelmans

Sunday, November 5 at 10:30 AM - 5 PM
Siobhan Davies Dance Studios
85 St Georges Road, SE1 6ER London, United Kingdom

When the state of mind changes and becomes more refined, the state of body is invited to become more refined as well. Vica versa, when the body becomes more functionally integrated by working from a tensegrity understanding, the mind starts to integrate with the movement. By doing so, one develops a sophisticated, embodied movement ability.

In this workshop we will work with the presence and quality of body and mind. Robin will make use of his background in various somatic disciplines such as Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung and his research in the myo-fascial meridians and tensegrity.

Robin is a dancer, performer, teacher, and maker of dance and theater. His work focuses on natural mobility, embodiment and presence. This is supported by an ongoing study of the movement of the body in different techniques, in the studio as a teacher or maker, on stage as a performer.
Robin is a teacher of contemporary dance at the Amsterdam School of the Arts and the Tilburg Dance Academy. The main work he researches is about experiential anatomy, release technique and contact improvisation. At Theater School De Trap in Amsterdam he teaches presence for performers and Chi Kung. He is also a teacher of Tai Chi Chuan, Chi Kung, meditation and Thai Massage.

Studio opens @ 10:30am for arrival
Workshop starts @11am

Cost: £40 pp

To secure a place on the workshop, please PM me or email at eva_rozsas@yahoo.co.uk

Hope to see many of you there

The Expressive Body
A workshop exploring the imaginative world of movement, voice and speech
Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th October 10.30am to 4.30pm

"Kate gave me a totally new angle on improv. She is one of the very few teachers that I recommend without hesitation"
John Cremer, improvisation trainer & speaker of the decade

This workshop is for everyone, whether you want to discover new forms of self-expression, enhance performance skills or develop presence in your everyday life.
Through practising simple improvisational exercises you’ll awaken your sensory awareness, discover the creative potential of your body and voice and open doors to your vast imagination. Working solo, duet and in groups  you’ll expand your listening skills and your ability to respond in the moment, developing a sense of connectedness to yourself and others.  You’ll also play with the musicality of speech and experiment with sourcing words from your body rather than your thinking mind.
Kate's classes are mainly influenced by her training in Action Theater™, a form of body-based theatre. She is also a Feldenkrais Method practitioner. She has been teaching across Europe for the last 12 years and recently moved to Limerick where she teaches voice and dance students.
You can come to the Saturday only, or the whole weekend.
If you have worked with me before and want to come to Sunday only, please get in touch.
"I haven't had so much fun since I was 8" Maya Sherwin, student
Venue: London Buddhist Arts Centre, Bullards Place, E2 0PT (nearest tube: Bethnal Green).
Cost: £115 for the weekend (£95 if deposit received by 9th October)
£60 for Saturday only (£50 if deposit received by 9th October)
